GAME BIRDS
Melanie MacDonald & Ernest Harris Jr.
6-28 February 2010
Opening reception: February 6th, 2 - 4pm

Melanie MacDonald and Ernest Harris Jr. have been friends and neighbours for many years. This two-person exhibit links the artists by their shared interest in game birds, birds hunted for food or sport.

Partridges and pheasants pop up in Melanie MacDonald's still-life paintings as ceramic chachkas or as decals on glassware. Part of her kitsch series, this body of work charts the wonky charm of flea market finds, speaks to our uncontrollable habits as collectors, and the tension between static objects and living things.

Ernest Harris Jr.'s ink and watercolour drawings of origami game birds play the looseness of his drawing style against the meticulous precision of origami. Origami, the japanese practice of paper folding, also functions as a metaphor for Harris Jr.'s own stylized, manicured view of nature, and how far removed he is as a suburbanite from where eating what you kill is a way of life.

St. Catharines Trillium Arts Awards

25th Annual City of St. Catharines Trillium Awards
Excellence in the Arts: Emerging Artist

The origin of St. Catharines as the Garden City of Canada dates back to the 1880´s when visitors to the Niagara area would travel to the city to view the colourful floral displays. Throughout the past 100 years, that tradition has continued, and St. Catharines still remains the Garden City. With that in mind, the City of St. Catharines initiated the Trillium Awards for landscape harmony in 1985. The program´s mandate - to recognize and honour those who have helped beautify our community - planted a seed of interest that continues to grow.

ARTS AWARDS- Sponsored by the St. Catharines Culture Committee
A) Excellence in the Arts Awards ... The two awards will recognize one established and one emerging artist for significant professional achievement.
B) Innovation in the Arts Award ... The award will recognize an Individual or Arts Organization whose enterprising efforts in 2007 or 2008 have provided the community with an event or program which has been both inclusive and inspirational.
C) Mayor’s Patron of the Arts Award ... Celebrating collaboration between the for-profit community and the arts, this award will recognize an individual or business for outstanding and creative partnerships, significant contributions, and/or service that has significantly impacted the arts and/or arts organizations in St. Catharines.
