This latest series of paintings documents life around a pond and bush-lot on my in-law’s property in the Upper Ottawa Valley. The subjects include plants, insects, birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.

Biannual Juried Exhibition
August 31 – October 7, 2012
Exhibition reception & Awards Presentation:
Sunday September 30, 2 – 4pm

The Grimsby Public Art Gallery’s Bi-annual Juried Exhibition is a province-wide competition, open to artists working in all media, including visual art, fine crafts, installation and new media. The call for entry was widely advertised earlier this year and by the June 29th deadline we had received over 250 entries. From these, the jurors selected the 32 pieces that will be in the show. The 2012 Biannual Juried Exhibition will be on display in the Main Gallery from August 31st to October 7th.

Like many juried shows that draw entries from a large geographical area, ours is selected from images. There are many advantages to this system. The cost of transportation to enter the show is minimal; a couple of dollars to send a cd in the mail instead of having to drive or ship the work to the gallery for consideration. This makes it possible for artists from across the province to enter the show for the same minimal cost. We also accept works in all media, including installation and outdoor works, as entries; again jurying from images is virtually the only way for artists who work in these media to participate.

Our three jurors for the 2012 show, Carolyn Dover, Ivan Jurakic and Stuart Reid, were faced with a diverse range of entries when they gathered in early July to make their selections. In the Jurors’ statement they said:

As a jury we worked towards a singular vision and all decisions were made by consensus. Our mutual interests and observations guided the decision-making process and lead us to select works that we found stimulating, thoughtful and provocative. We hope that you enjoy our selection.

The jurors will be returning once the works are in the gallery to determine the prize winners. These prizes – the first place Canadian Tire Award for $500; the second place NRB Inc Award for $300; the third place Coles Florist Award for $200 and the Special Effects Art Shoppe Award for the Best Local Artist – will be presented at the Exhibition Reception on Sunday September 30th. One further award, the Viewers Choice Award sponsored by the Gallery Shop, will be presented after the exhibition closes.

Plan to visit the gallery during this exciting exhibition to see amazing works from across Ontario – and remember to vote; your favourite artist may win the Viewers’ Choice Award.
